Route description

Dates: 23.01-01.02.2025
Region: Finike - Alanya (Turkey) - Girne, Famagusta (Northern Cyprus)
Yacht: Salona 44

A ten-day 500-mile hike from Turkey to Northern Cyprus and back. An excellent practice for those who want to gain experience of long-distance hiking in difficult conditions. Visit the amazing places of the Turkish part of Cyprus.

A trip to Northern Cyprus is an expedition to unknown places.
This part of the island is full of historical attractions and is a unique place where churches and mosques stand side by side, and the remains of ancient settlements, tombs and castles are a real find for history lovers. We will try to see as many of these attractions as possible.
There is plenty of time, if you have to wait out the storm, which is very likely in winter, it will not affect the program.
We will work out the route and details of the program together, based on the weather conditions and the wishes of the participants.
Yacht Salon 44 is fast, reliable, and comfortable. A heater with controllers in each cabin will provide a comfortable rest between shifts. If it blows normally, then each sea crossing will last no more than a day.

Where can we go as part of this hike?

KYRENIA CASTLE - a beautifully preserved 16th century castle towers over the old harbor of the city of Girne (Kyrenia). Behind the massive walls there is a well-kept courtyard, a 12th-century chapel, dungeons where prisoners were kept, the tomb of the Ottoman admiral and many other objects.

The main highlight of the location is the Shipwreck Museum, which preserves the wreckage of a 4th century Greek merchant ship. The wooden vessel was discovered in 1965, and about 400 amphorae, almonds, millstones, wooden dishes and other items of historical value were found on board.

The BUYUK KHAN CARAVANSERAI is a legacy of the Ottoman conquerors that has survived to the present day and attracts with its beautiful architecture and rich history.

Dating from the 16th century, the building is perfectly preserved. Originally built to accommodate travelers, the building had a square shape and consisted of two floors. The ground floor housed stables, warehouses and shops, and the upper floor was used as housing.

After restoration, it serves as an art center, where galleries, workshops, souvenir shops are located, piano concerts and other entertainment events are periodically held.

The CASTLE of ST. HILARION is located in the Kyrenia mountain range, it was originally built as a monastery. However, it was subsequently fortified and, together with the castles of Buffavento and Cantaru, was used to protect the island from Arab raids. The castle consisted of three levels. The lower segments were used for household purposes, stables, servants and soldiers of the military garrison were located. There was a church in the middle part of the castle. And on the upper level there were members of the royal family.

THE GHOST TOWN OF VAROSHA IN FAMAGUSTA

In the early 70s, the Famagusta area of Varosha was a thriving tourist destination. Beautiful beaches with unusually soft sand, high-rise buildings of expensive hotels and private villas, restaurants, bars and nightclubs - there was everything you needed to relax. The resort was visited by such famous personalities as Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor. However, everything changed in 1974 after the arrival of Turkish troops and the mass evacuation of the local population. Cyprus was divided into two parts, and Varosha overnight turned into a deserted ghost town, and remains so to this day. Under the influence of the sun and natural processes, once luxurious hotels are gradually being destroyed, and the atmosphere of the abandoned city itself makes an indelible impression. Today, the city is under military protection, but part of the territory is open to the public.

RUINS OF THE ANCIENT CITY OF SALAMIS

It was believed that this city, located near Famagusta and still partially buried underground, was the capital of Cyprus in the 11th century BC, and later served as an important trading city that retained its importance for many years. The city survived several natural disasters, and eventually, yielding to the forces of nature and the negative effects of man, surrendered, leaving subsequent generations with reminders of its former power.

Today, there you can see a massive amphitheater, a large agora, statues and remains of swimming pools, elements of a two-storey villa, water tanks and many other curious artifacts.
