Route description

The most popular place on the Italian Adriatic coast is, of course, Venice. The most famous and most amazing city in the world is the city on the water. He conquers at first sight. Majestic and beautiful palaces form a bizarre and mysterious world where the detached elegance of the Gothic is juxtaposed with the magnificent luxury of the Baroque. And almost everywhere you can hear the splash of water, which, washing the plinths of buildings, reflects architectural masterpieces. Originated on marshy, marshy islands, at first the city was an ordinary small trading port, and then became one of the most powerful and vibrant states of the Middle Ages. Venice was founded in the 5th century by several groups of exiles who took refuge in the lagoon from the barbarian hordes. For a long time Venice was an independent republic, it owned possessions in Istria, Dalmatia and Greece. In 1204, the Venetian Crusaders captured Constantinople. Venice maintained its status as a great maritime power until the 16th century. With the advent of new trading powers - Spain, England and Holland, the republic is gradually losing its power, and finally the star of Venice set with the arrival of Napoleon's troops.
Venice consists of 118 islands scattered in the lagoon, which are connected by bridges and ferry crossings. The Grand Canal divides Venice into two unequal parts. The length of the canal is about 4 km, and the width varies from 30 to 70 meters. The islands have grown together into a single organism, transformed from isolated pieces of land into an integral and delightful city. A four-kilometer road bridge connects Venice with the mainland. In total, there are about 160 canals in Venice, over which about 400 bridges are thrown. It is the only city in the world where there is no ground transportation. Even a bicycle is prohibited here. Everyone travels on foot or by water: on gondolas, boats and water trams. All the buildings of this city rest on a special, multi-layered foundation system, designed specifically to neutralize the silty soil of the lagoon. The lowest layer, submerged in water, consists of wooden piles driven into the soil. Then there is a wooden flooring, on which a stone foundation is laid, on which the walls of the houses rest.
