The IYT International Bareboat Skipper course runs over 12 days.
Certification requirements include a VHF radio operator qualification, 200 nautical miles of sailing experience, and 10 days spent at sea.
Miles and days completed during training count toward this minimum.
An intensive 12-day program combining theory and hands-on training, designed for complete beginners.
The recommended minimum age for this course is 16.
Course program:
- Skipper’s responsibilities, crew safety, provisioning
- Hull and equipment checks, engine and systems, passage plan
- Fuel and water capacity and autonomy
- Sources of meteorological information, weather phenomena, breezes, cloud types and formations
- Course plotting and passage planning, factor analysis, passage strategy, navigation plan
- Standard coastal procedures, position fixing, tracking and logging the route
- Port regulations, customs and immigration formalities
- Lines (ropes), knots, use of halyards, deck work
- Boat handling in confined spaces, picking up a mooring, anchoring and weighing anchor, berthing
- Tides and currents, tidal height, the rule of twelfths, charting tidal and current effects
- Collision regulations (rules of the road), lights, marks and sound signals, applying the rules in practice
- Effective use of the dinghy
Restrictions:
- Vessels up to a maximum length of 78 ft / 24 meters
- In coastal areas up to 20 miles from shore
- In fair weather with moderate wind and sea state
- This qualification level is generally the minimum required to charter yachts in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean
