IYT Yachtmaster Coastal Sail
Advanced training for confident yacht handling up to 24 meters and up to 60 miles offshore

Yachtmaster Coastal is a major step in yachting mastery.
The course is designed for experienced skippers who want to expand their capabilities, refine navigation skills, and handle a yacht in more demanding conditions.

This is a recreational Certificate of Competency confirming your right to command sailing or power vessels up to 24 meters, up to 60 nautical miles offshore.

🔥 What the course involves

Format: full onboard program

Duration:
• 5 days

Includes a practical exam on the water and a written theory exam

✅ Entry requirements
This is not a beginner course. To enroll, you need verified experience:
Age — 18+
25 days at sea
800 nautical miles
2 days as watch leader / captain
12 hours of night watch
All sea time must be completed before the exam
Valid VHF certificate

🎓 The certificate entitles you to:
Operate a vessel up to 24 m / 78 ft
Area — up to 60 nautical miles from shore
Weather — moderate wind and sea state

⚠️ The certificate is not suitable for commercial use
⚠️ Cannot be "upgraded" to the professional level (requires confirmation)

📘 Course syllabus includes
Navigation and theory:
International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG)
Charts, pilot books, navigational publications
Bearings, leeway, course corrections
Currents, tides, height of tide calculations
Passage planning and pilotage
Meteorology, cloud types, forecasting

Practical boat handling:
Close-quarters maneuvers
Sail/engine handling
Anchoring, berthing, departure
Line handling, knots, deck operations
Safety at sea and emergency procedures

📝 How the exam works
The exam consists of three parts:
1) Practical part on the water
You must demonstrate:
yacht handling in various conditions
berthing/mooring
maneuvering
anchoring

2) Oral exam. Questions on:
seamanship, navigation, safety

3) Written theory test

⚠️ The certificate is awarded only upon successfully passing the exam.
If the student does not reach the required standard, the examiner issues a confidential report with recommendations for further training.
