International Bareboat Skipper — a course for independently skippering a yacht up to 24 m

This course is your step to true freedom at sea. Upon completion, you will be officially able to charter and skipper a cruising sailing yacht up to 24 meters in any country worldwide.

The course takes place in Cyprus, in Limassol, on a cruising yacht. Duration — 4–5 days of intensive practice.

⭐ Who can enroll?

You can join International Bareboat Skipper in two ways:

1) For beginners — after Day Skipper

If you don’t yet have the required experience, first complete the foundation course:

After Day Skipper you’ll be ready for the Bareboat level.

2) For those who already have sea experience

You can sign up directly for International Bareboat Skipper if:

✔ you are 16+ years old
✔ you have completed International Crew (or an equivalent from another school)
✔ you have a VHF certificate (except ISSA)
✔ by the end of the course you can document:

200 nautical miles of cumulative experience,
10 days at sea (8 hours each, without prolonged anchorage stays).

⚓ Course format and syllabus
Intensive hands-on training on a cruising yacht:

📘 You will learn:
skipper’s duties and responsibilities
vessel preparation, inspection of hull, rigging, and systems
crew management and onboard safety
passage planning and pilotage
weather forecasting, breezes, cloud cover
yacht handling in confined waters
berthing, anchoring operations, maneuvers
working with currents, tides, and the rule of twelfths
COLREGs (Rules of the Road), lights, shapes, and sound signals
advanced deck work and dinghy handling

🛠 Practice all day:
hoisting and lowering sails
berthing in varied conditions
handling in marinas and at anchor
coastal navigation and near-shore maneuvering

🌍 Privileges you will obtain:
The International Bareboat Skipper Sail certificate allows you to:

✔ skipper a yacht up to 24 m
✔ up to 20 nautical miles offshore
✔ in daylight hours
✔ in moderate wind and sea state
✔ charter yachts in Europe and worldwide

Most charter companies consider this certificate the standard for bareboat charter.

🧾 ICC (International Certificate of Competency)
Course graduates can additionally obtain an ICC if their citizenship qualifies—an official international document valid under UNECE IWC Resolution 40.
