IYT Yachtmaster Offshore
The highest level of yachting proficiency. Command yachts up to 24 m, up to 150 nautical miles off the coast.

Yachtmaster Offshore is one of the most prestigious recreational certificates of competence in the global yachting industry.
The certificate is intended for experienced skippers who want to confidently command yachts in coastal and partly ocean waters, undertake passages up to 150 miles offshore, plan complex routes, and handle the vessel in non‑standard situations.

This level demands substantial experience, deep knowledge, and readiness for intensive training.

5 days of practical training on board

Includes a comprehensive exam:
✔ practical test on the water
✔ oral questions
✔ written theory

Entry requirements

The candidate must evidence sufficient sea time:
50 days at sea as an active crew member
3,000 nautical miles, including:
at least 2,000 miles in coastal waters
only genuine passages, not day sails
30 hours of night watches, at least 6 hours as skipper/watch leader
Medical certificate
Valid VHF certificate (if not, complete the course before the start)
⚠ ISSA VHF is not accepted.

What the certificate authorizes:
Command of a vessel up to 24 m
Up to 150 nautical miles offshore

Compass work: variation, deviation
Tides, currents, height of tide calculations
Meteorology
Atmospheric processes
Cyclones, anticyclones, tropical storms
Northern and Southern Hemispheres
Weather forecasting
Passage planning
Electronic navigation systems
Vessel handling
Manoeuvring
Mooring, anchoring
Towing
COLREG: lights, shapes, situation recognition
Emergency response: fire, man overboard, system failures

Additionally:
Basics of maritime law
Vessel systems and engine

The exam consists of three parts:
✔ Practical test
✔ Oral exam
✔ Theory test

Written assessment across the entire syllabus.

⚠️ Successful completion of the course does NOT guarantee the certificate.
If the level is insufficient, the examiner issues a report with recommendations.
