About the tour

Private day sail from San Miguel de Abona along the south coast of Tenerife. Run into the open ocean, anchor stops at volcanic coves, swimming, snorkeling and return in the evening light.

Bavaria 37 Aphrodita (2003 refit 2023). Sailing yacht with enclosed saloon, cockpit and head. Designed for day runs with anchor stops, the hull gives a soft motion on ocean swell, with enough deck space to rest under way and at anchor.

Itinerary
Duration 8 hours. Start at 09:00.

09:00 departure from Marina San Miguel. Sail trim and run toward open water. Light breakfast and drinks served under way.

10:30 anchor stop in El Medano Cove under Montaña Roja. The red volcanic slope drops straight to the sea, kite schools tow by the wind and the ledges suit snorkeling along the edge. The water gives a clean contrast against dark rock.

12:00 anchor off Playa La Tejita. A long open beach with no buildings, quieter than El Medano. Snacks and drinks served on board. Shallow entry for swimming.

14:00 run toward Punta de Abona along open shore. Dolphins are often seen here from the rail, shearwaters and gulls work the cliff line. The coast runs wild with no development.

16:00 anchor off Los Abrigos. Quiet water behind the point with the fishing village line in view. A floating lounger can be used on request.

18:00 return to Marina San Miguel in soft evening light.

Tour itinerary

Tenerife’s coastline mixes young lava cliffs, older marine terraces and several natural bays that formed where past flows met the sea. The south and southwest coasts have the most reliable lee with predictable trade winds and weak swell, which is why marinas at San Miguel, Las Galletas and Los Gigantes became primary departure points. Along the west coast pilot charts mark upwelling zones that attract short-finned pilot whales; the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera is one of the most consistent places to encounter resident groups. Older fishing coves such as Alcalá and Punta del Hidalgo still show stone slipways and small traditional winch points carved into basalt. The Anaga side in the northeast is exposed and holds several shallow lava benches that require wide offing.

Sailing since childhood, yachting since my teens, and a life at sea.
I’m inspired by the adrenaline of race starts and the thrill of fighting for seconds, but nothing beats the pleasure of an unhurried cruise: when the sail catches the wind and there’s good food, easy conversation, and a crew you truly want to share the sea with.
